Norwegian Wooden Stool with Carved Legs, Norway Early 20th Century
-
Description
Wooden stools have been widespread in Europe during much of the past centuries, the 20th century being no exception. Like other Scandinavian stools, Norwegian pieces have diverse functions – such as household or decorative objects (more recently). One thing however that all stools have in common is the craftsmanship and history embedded in them.
This stool has a beautiful folk impression, with visible, raw craftsmanship. This stool is surprisingly comfortable, which should not come as a surprise since functionality has been historically important for Scandinavian furniture makers. The low seat has a deep concave seating surface and shows the organic texture and pattern of the wood. This creates a stunning, elemental aesthetic that praises both the material’s natural beauty and the craftsman’s work. Still, the eyes are immediately drawn to the carved sculptural legs that support the seat. The three legs share the same pattern carved into them, with a deep, half moon shaped incision and a ribbed pattern right under the seat. There is an ‘X’ carved into each leg at the top, adding to the distinct, almost tribal look. Traditionally, these stools were made of different types of Scandinavian hardwood and served a mostly functional, utilitarian purpose.
This stool has a stunning look to it with visible, raw craftsmanship and history. Using organic stools with rich history has recently become popular in contemporary homes. This is because - like this stool - these accent pieces are all completely unique and carry a charm that is impossible to mass produce.
