Description
French porcelain and gilt bronze mounted writing desk
French, 19th Century
Height 116cm, width 91cm, depth 51cm
This stunning bonheur du jour was made in France during the 19th century. A variation of a lady’s writing desk, this furniture type was first introduced in France around 1760.
The piece consists of a central cabinet surrounded by two drawers on both sides. The lockable, hinged doors open to reveal storage space with one shelf. In front is a writing desk with magnificent parquetry detailing, similar to one adorning the rest of the bonheur du jour.
The drawer fronts and cabinet door are mounted with intricately cast ormolu detailing and Sèvres style porcelain plaques. Floral compositions as well as genre scenes are portrayed on the blue and white plaques and adorned with gilt detailing.
All flat surfaces, such as the desk or cabinet top are framed with an ormolu border, beautifully framing the additional space onto which objects could be placed on.
Below is a large drawer, the front superbly decorated with Sèvres style porcelain and ormolu mounts of a similar design to the features above.
Standing on four cabriole legs, each one terminates with an intricately cast ormolu mount, adding grandeur to the piece.
Historically found in a lady’s bedroom where one could write letters and enjoy a moment of reflection, this spectacular writing desk would make a superb addition to the appropriate contemporary interior. -
