This oil painting is by Daniel Israel (1859–1901), an Austrian artist renowned for his Orientalist scenes. While his works often depict richly detailed interiors and everyday life in the Middle East, this particular composition is unusual featuring an anti-Semitic theme, an element rarely seen in Israel’s body of work or in Orientalist art more broadly. Israel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and later in Munich, before embarking on extensive travels through the Balkans, Turkey, Egypt, and Palestine, which deeply informed his artistic output.

The scene is set within a sumptuous interior, densely layered with an array of decorative textiles. Carpets, cushions, curtains, blankets, and wall hangings fill the space, many featuring intricate geometric designs. The only break in this tapestry of fabrics is a small section of white brick wall visible in the background, which adds to the overall feeling of warmth and intimacy in the composition.

To the right of the scene, three young women clad in traditional Middle Eastern garments are positioned in various relaxed poses. One lounges on a sofa, another stands with her hands on her hips, while the third sits on the floor. Their expressions reveal astonishment as they fix their gaze on an elderly man seated across from them, who holds an unexpected object in his hands.

The man presents a jack-in-the-box, a pastel blue toy from which a puppet springs forth. However, this is no ordinary children’s plaything. The puppet is grotesquely caricatured to resemble a Jewish man, complete with a pronounced nose and a tall top hat - features commonly found in anti-Semitic imagery of the 19th century. The box itself is adorned with a Star of David, and its light blue colour draws the eye immediately, standing in stark contrast to the earthy, muted palette that dominates the rest of the painting. What is typically an object of surprise or amusement is transformed here into a symbol of ethnic stereotyping and bias.

The women’s reactions reflect a range of responses: two appear amazed, while the third, seated on the floor, recoils in visible fear, extending an arm in a defensive gesture. Through this unsettling juxtaposition of innocence and prejudice, the artist introduces a narrative of fear and misunderstanding that aligns with the era’s cultural tensions.

The work is signed in the lower left corner, ‘D. Israel, München’, and is presented in an intricately carved giltwood frame with a central plaque reading ‘D. Israel’.

Rich in detail, technically accomplished, and thematically striking, this rare and thought-provoking painting makes for a highly distinctive addition to any fine art collection.
