Description
A sculptural Brazilian Modern chaise longue attributed to Carlo Hauner, dating to the 1950s. The design balances an expressive, handwoven wicker shell with a slender steel structure, creating a striking interplay of organic texture, fluid form and architectural precision.
The chaise’s elongated silhouette is defined by its gently reclining profile and continuous woven surface, which curves around the body while preserving a sense of visual lightness. The open wicker construction reveals the clarity of the framework beneath, while the extended armrests and elevated base give the piece a dynamic, almost suspended presence. Its composition is distinctly sculptural from every angle.
The original wicker remains in very good vintage condition, retaining the natural tonal variation and character developed over time. The steel frame has been professionally refinished in satin black, creating a restrained contrast with the warmth of the woven cane.
Newly upholstered cushions are finished in luxurious burnished tobacco mohair velvet—a dense, short-pile textile selected for its softness, durability and subtle luminosity. The warm tobacco-brown color carries nuanced caramel undertones and responds beautifully to changes in light without appearing glossy. The tailored cushion construction combines supportive high-resilience foam with a soft wool wrap, producing a comfortable, gently crowned profile. Horizontal channels articulate the upholstery while complementing the linear rhythm of the wicker.
New custom-made brass sabots finish the legs, adding a refined metallic accent while protecting wood and stone floors.
A sophisticated example of postwar Brazilian design, this chaise unites traditional natural materials with the formal experimentation and elegant modernity associated with Carlo Hauner’s work in Brazil. -
