Description
A sculptural Brazilian Modern extendable dining table crafted from richly figured caviúna hardwood in the 1960s. Its refined silhouette balances an exceptionally thin tabletop with a deeply articulated apron and four slender, gently curved legs, creating a sense of lightness despite the density and strength of the wood.
The tabletop is distinguished by an expressive composition of book-matched caviúna veneers. Contrasting grain directions converge across the surface to form a dramatic geometric pattern, transforming the natural figuring of the wood into an architectural focal point. Subtly softened corners and a delicate perimeter edge further emphasize the table’s precise, elegant profile.
Designed as a versatile three-in-one form, the table expands through concealed extension leaves to create three distinct configurations, comfortably accommodating four, six, or eight diners. In each position, the relationship between the top, apron, and tapered legs remains visually balanced. The transformation is both functional and sculptural, reflecting the ingenuity developed for adaptable domestic interiors in mid-century Brazil.
Professionally refinished, the caviúna displays a warm, luminous surface with pronounced grain and natural tonal variation. Although the designer remains unidentified, the table’s sophisticated proportions, inventive construction, and exceptional use of native hardwood place it firmly within the Brazilian Modern tradition.
A compelling example of anonymous Brazilian design, the table combines material richness, sculptural presence, and intelligent functionality in a remarkably refined form.
