Paavo Tynell Chandelier Model 9030 in Brass & Original Shades, Taito 1940s

A beautiful five-light chandelier, model 9030, designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Taito Oy in Finland in the 1940s. This example retains its original shades in linen over cardboard, whose textured surfaces complement the warm patina of the brass.

Five gracefully curved arms extend from a ribbed central body, each supporting a cylindrical shade with a glass diffuser underneath. Above the arms, a sculptural ornament of perforated, leaf-like brass elements surrounds the slender stem. The combination of flowing lines, botanical details and simple shades gives the chandelier an elegant, balanced appearance.

The chandelier provides a warm, inviting light and would sit beautifully above a dining table or in a living room or entrance hall. Its natural materials and distinctive brass detailing suit both traditional and modern interiors.

The lamp is in original vintage condition, with beautiful patina on the brass and wear consistent with age and use. The original linen-over-cardboard shades show age-related wear. One of the glass diffusers has a small chip; please refer to the photographs for details.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s foremost lighting designers. Trained as a metalworker, he co-founded Taito Oy in 1918 and designed lighting for private homes and major public buildings, including the Finnish Parliament House. His work gained international recognition through Finland House in New York after the Second World War. Known for his sensitive use of brass, delicate perforations and forms inspired by nature, Tynell remains one of the most sought-after names in Finnish lighting design.
