Pair of De Distel Butterfly Lidded Vases by L. Nienhuis, circa 1903

Price Upon Request
  • Description
A pair of Dutch Art Nouveau lidded vases by L. Nienhuis for De Distel, Amsterdam, circa 1903, acquired from the Meentwijck Collection.

The elongated forms are crowned by domed covers with small finials. A band of stylised butterflies in muted green encircles each vase, contrasting beautifully with the cream-coloured matt glaze. Their balanced proportions and restrained ornament give the pair a quietly distinctive presence.

One of the two is the actual vase illustrated in Toegepaste kunst 1890–1940, p. 106, fig. 122. Presented together, the vases offer collectors both a coordinated display and a direct connection to the published Meentwijck Collection.
