Description
A Dutch Art Nouveau ceramic mantel clock by Zuid-Holland, Gouda, circa 1900, featuring a stylised bird-of-paradise amidst flowers and foliage.
The richly coloured decoration unfolds across a rounded glazed earthenware case. Outstretched wings and long, flowing tail feathers give the bird a graceful sense of movement, complemented by red chrysanthemum-like blooms, curling green leaves and a warm golden-yellow ground. Pale borders and shaped feet bring balance to the elaborate composition.
Combining the presence of a sculptural ceramic object with the character of an antique timepiece, this clock makes a distinctive addition to a collection of Gouda pottery or a thoughtfully furnished interior. -
