Carlo de Carli (Carlo di Carli)

Italian, 1910 - 1999
Carlo de Carli (1910–1999) was a distinguished Italian architect, designer, and educator whose work helped define the course of 20th-century Italian design. Born in Milan, he graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1934 and began his career working alongside Gio Ponti before establishing his own studio. De Carli became known for his refined, elegant furniture—particularly his chairs, tables, and decorative pieces produced during the 1950s and 1960s. His designs are celebrated for their balance of craftsmanship, modernism, and human-centered form, with several models becoming iconic, such as the Mod. 158 dining chairs and his award-winning collaborations with Italian manufacturers like Cassina.

In addition to his design work, De Carli was a highly influential professor and academic leader. He succeeded Ponti at the Polytechnic of Milan and later served as dean, where he promoted his concept of “spazio primario” (primary space), focusing on the relationship between people, objects, and architectural environments. Today, Carlo de Carli’s legacy lives on through his timeless furniture and enduring impact on Italian modernism.
