France & Daverkosen

American
France & Daverkosen was a Danish furniture manufacturer that was founded in 1911 by partners Svend France and Christian Daverkosen. The company produced high-quality furniture pieces that were characterized by their elegant, modernist design and attention to detail.

In the early years, France & Daverkosen produced furniture in the Arts and Crafts style, but by the 1930s, the company had transitioned to the more modernist designs that would become their hallmark. The company's furniture pieces often featured sleek lines, curved forms, and the use of high-quality materials such as teak, rosewood, and leather.

One of the most famous designs produced by France & Daverkosen is the "Pelican" chair, which was designed by Finn Juhl in 1940. The chair is known for its striking sculptural form, which incorporates elements of traditional Danish craftsmanship with modernist design.

In the 1950s, France & Daverkosen merged with the furniture manufacturer Fredericia to form Fredericia Furniture, which continues to produce high-quality furniture pieces to this day. Many of the classic designs produced by France & Daverkosen, including the Pelican chair, continue to be produced by Fredericia Furniture and are highly sought after by collectors of mid-century modern design.
