Pierre Guariche

French, 1926 - 1995
Pierre Guariche (1926–1995) trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and quickly established himself as a leading figure in French post‑war design, working in the studio of Marcel Gascoin and joining the Union des Artistes Modernes. He created influential furniture and lighting for major manufacturers including Airborne, Steiner and Pierre Disderot, and in 1954 co‑founded the Atelier de Recherche Plastique (ARP) with Michel Mortier and Joseph‑André Motte to advance innovative materials and industrial production methods. In 1957 he became Artistic Director of furniture maker Meurop and from the 1960s focused on interior architecture for offices, ski resorts and public buildings. Guariche’s work is defined by its clean functionality, pioneering use of tubular steel, molded plywood and plastics, and its commitment to making modern design accessible.
