Description
A Leerdam Unica glass vase designed by Chris Lanooy, circa 1926, combining a rounded body with a short, gently flared neck.
The green glass is enlivened by a pronounced network of crackled surface decoration. Irregular patterns extend across the body and neck, catching the light and creating a richly varied interplay of transparency, reflection and texture. The restrained silhouette allows the expressive surface to remain the focus.
Chris Lanooy (1881–1948), known for his work in ceramics as well as glass, brought an experimental approach to his collaboration with Glasfabriek Leerdam. His exploration of Unica during the 1920s forms part of an important period in the development of Dutch art glass.
Formerly in the Meentwijck Collection, the Netherlands. The present vase is illustrated at the centre of figure 250 in the collection’s published catalogue (2000). -
