Description
A published Leerdam Serica vase by A.D. Copier, dated 1927 in the Meentwijck Collection catalogue.
The present vase is the exact red glass example illustrated at the left of figure 233 in Leven in een verzameling: Toegepaste kunst 1890–1940 uit de collectie Meentwijck, pp. 196–197. Formerly part of the Meentwijck Collection, its identity is recorded in the accompanying caption as a red Serica vase manufactured by Glasfabriek Leerdam.
Blown into an optic mould, the vase combines a rounded body with a restrained opening. Its saturated red colour and subtle optical effects give the glass depth while preserving the clarity of the silhouette.
Andries Dirk Copier (1901–1991) played a central role in modern Dutch glass design and became artistic head of Leerdam in 1927. His Serica designs developed from the experimental approach of his Unica, translating explorations in glass into serially produced works.
An expressive example of Dutch Art Deco glass, distinguished by its published collection history. -
