Description
An Amsterdam School pendant lamp by De Nieuwe Honsel, model L245, designed circa 1926, with the design attributed to Jaap Gidding (1887–1955).
Gidding was a significant Dutch decorative artist and designer, renowned for his work on Amsterdam’s Theater Tuschinski. His expressive use of colour and ornament connects his work with both Art Deco and the Amsterdam School.
The lamp combines kiln-fired painted leaded glass with a sculptural copper framework. Its tapering, faceted silhouette contrasts with flowing decorative motifs, creating a rich interplay of colour, pattern and light.
This very lamp was exhibited at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in the 2016 exhibition Wonen in de Amsterdamse School: Ontwerpen voor het interieur 1910–1930. It is illustrated in the accompanying catalogue on p. 125, fig. 7.14; the corresponding design drawing for model L245 appears alongside it as fig. 7.15.
Its exhibition and publication history give the piece particular interest for collectors of Amsterdam School lighting and Dutch decorative arts. -
