Description
This very finely knotted Turkish city carpet from the Istanbul suburbs is completely Persian in style from the creamy ivory field with a round, 16 point and lobe medallion surrounded by two broken wreaths of intensely floriated botehs. Surging corners and pale green border. Extra pile strips at each end finish the borders. Weaving began at Hereke under Ottoman Court auspices in the 1840's, but later died out until revived under private patronage in the early 1960's. This top condition piece has a velvety, clipped-low pile of excellent wool and goes well with (very) formal furnishings.
