Description
Four Meissen porcelain plaques depicting the Four Seasons
German, early 19th Century
Each plaque has height 12cm, width 10cm, depth 6cm
This delicately detailed set of four allegorical porcelain plaques portrays family scenes within the theme of the Four Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
Spring can be identified by the three figures festooned with garlands of flowers; Summer depicts the farmer with a scythe holding a bundle of wheat whilst he cradles his wife and child; Autumn shows the child being fed grapes while his parents appear flushed and drunk with the father drinking from a jug of wine; and Winter shows figures huddled in blankets.
Each of the four plaques is set in a gilt frame, and each are marked to the reverse with the blue crossed sword marks of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory.
