Description
Antique Danish Orientalist oil painting of a military scene by Niels Simonsen
Danish, 1860
Canvas: Height 27cm, width 35cm
Frame: Height 43cm, width 52cm, depth 4cm
This very fine Orientalist painting is by the renowned Danish artist Niels Simonsen (1807–1885), who was celebrated for his masterful military scenes. Initially gaining success as a portrait sculptor, he transitioned to painting in 1833, quickly becoming one of Denmark’s leading history and battle artists. His travels across Europe and North Africa enriched his work, and in 1883, he was honoured with membership in the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts.
This dynamic battle painting captures a dramatic clash between French Zouaves and Arabic horsemen. The Zouaves, elite light infantry serving in French North Africa, were known for their distinctive, Orientalist-inspired uniforms, making them a popular subject in 19th century military art. The painting is rendered in deeper tones, adding to the dramatic feel of the scene.
This remarkable piece is housed in an ornate gilt frame with a plaque inscribed ‘PRF Niels Simonsen / Zuaver og Arabere I Kamp’. It is also signed ‘N.S. 60’ in the lower left corner.
The painting is a striking example of Simonsen’s skill and historical artistry, making it a valuable addition to any fine art collection.
