Description
Albano Poli’s sculptural lighting designs for Poliarte captured the expressive spirit of Italian design in the post-war decades. This large wall lamp, created in the 1970s, is a prime example of his mastery in manipulating glass to convey motion, texture and light.
Design
This piece is constructed from an architectural composition of hand-moulded glass elements arranged in a vertical configuration. Each ribbon of glass is slightly curved and organically shaped, catching and refracting the light in a soft, diffused glow. The glass has a lightly bubbled texture, typical of Poli’s work, that gives the surface a tactile quality and refracts the light unevenly, adding depth and visual movement. These elements are mounted on a rectangular metal backplate.
Poliarte, founded by Albano Poli in Verona in 1968, became known for its artisanal approach to lighting. Rather than mass production, each piece was treated as a sculptural object. This sconce, with its interplay of curved and straight lines, evokes a quiet sense of rhythm and balance. Perfect for use in a hallway, stairwell or feature wall, it radiates both functional light and a distinct sculptural presence.
Condition
The condition is very good. The glass is complete with no chips or cracks observed. Minor surface wear to the backplate consistent with age. -
