Description
A sculptural composition of light and material, this table lamp attributed to Angelo Brotto offers a rich encounter with Italian design of the post-war period.
Design
Cast in solid brass and finished with hammer-chiselling, the rectangular base reveals an abstract relief composition. Flowing vertical ridges, like bark or molten bronze, are interrupted by a radiant sun motif bearing a stylised human face. This poetic detail, both primitive and symbolic, evokes Brotto’s fascination with organic forms and spiritual iconography. During his tenure with Esperia in the 1960s and 70s, Brotto frequently worked in cast metal, introducing expressive relief work into otherwise functional designs. Esperia, known for its artisanal approach and limited production runs, encouraged this artistic freedom. The form of the base is monolithic, its simplicity offset by the intense surface treatment. Brass has aged into a mellow gold, with areas of light oxidation reinforcing the handcrafted quality of the piece. Though unsigned, the visual language and production method align closely with Brotto’s known work for Esperia.
A lamp that functions as a luminous sculpture, merging brutalist influence with post-war Italian artistry.
Condition
The condition is very good. Patina is present across the brass surface, with minor scuffs and marks consistent with age. No structural defects are visible.
The table lamp comes without the lamp shade, however this can be added when available. -
