Einar Johansen Table Lamp in Gradient Glazed Ceramic, Søholm, Denmark, 1960s

$ 2,500
  • Description
    This striking generously sized table lamp was designed by Einar Johansen and produced by Søholm Stentøj in Denmark during the 1960s. The lamp is stamped with the manufacturer’s name and the model number 1070 on the underside of the base.

    The ceramic base features a beautiful cylindrical lower section that transitions into a diabolo-shaped upper part, topped by a slimmer neck. The stoneware is finished in a glossy, multicolored glaze, showcasing refined and vibrant hues of blue, green, purple and brown. These colors blend seamlessly into one another, creating a sophisticated gradient effect. The drum-shaped lampshade is made of Dupion silk in an alabaster color. The neutral tone provides an elegant contrast to the vivid, expressive base.

    The lamp has been rewired and is fitted with a standard E26/E27 bulb socket and a 220V European plug. The lamp is in very good condition.

    Specified dimensions:
    Total height including shade: 60.5 cm / 23.8 in
    Height of the base only (excluding shade): 42.5 cm / 16.7 in
    Diameter of the shade: 35 cm / 13.8 in

    About the manufacturer
    Søholm, or Søholm Stentøj (Søholm Stoneware), has roots that trace back to the first half of the 17th century on the Danish island of Bornholm, renowned for its pottery and fine ceramics. The Søholm factory was established in 1835 in Rønne, Bornholm, by Herman Sonne Wolffsen (1811–1887) and Edvard Christian Sonne, making it one of the island's oldest ceramic factories until it closed in 1996. The name "Søholm" originated from the faience factory near Copenhagen where the two founders had previously worked from 1828 to 1839 (with a lease in 1834). In the mid-20th century, Søholm expanded its production to include a wide range of stoneware, offering diverse designs and shapes. During this time, Danish ceramic artist Einar Johansen joined the company, creating a variety of sought-after pieces, including his popular "blue series," which remains highly collectible today.
