Description
This first edition "Akari" model 30A pendant was designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951 and produced by the original manufacturer, Ozeki & Co. This spherical lantern features a signature ribbed structure of bamboo and washi paper, creating a soft, diffused glow when illuminated. The design represents Noguchi's synthesis of ancient Japanese craft and mid-century sculptural modernism.
Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was a prominent American artist whose career spanned six decades. Known for his ability to blend Eastern and Western aesthetics, his "Akari" light sculptures, begun in 1951, are among his most enduring works. Created in Gifu, Japan, these lamps were designed to bring the quality of sunlight into a room through the use of traditional materials like washi paper and bamboo. -
