Description
A beautiful and exceptionally rare ceiling lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Taito, dating from the late 1940s to early 1950s. The piece features its original mouth-blown glass shade in a warm champagne tone, softly diffusing light and enriched by subtle air bubbles that attest to its handcrafted origin. The elegant brass rim, delicately decorated with a rhythmic, almost lace-like motif, frames the shade and creates a refined silhouette, while the organically shaped perforated central dish adds both visual interest and a gentle play of light. When illuminated, the upper brass detailing casts a lively and atmospheric pattern onto the ceiling, enhancing the lamp’s sculptural presence.
Interestingly, the design appears at first glance to combine elements from different periods of Tynell’s work, with the decorative rim reminiscent of his earlier 1930s–early 1940s pieces and the perforated center characteristic of his late 1940s designs. Archival material confirms that Tynell did in fact merge these elements within single models, making this lamp a particularly compelling and authentic example of his evolving style. Please see archive photo.
The lamp has been carefully restored, with updated electrical wiring, polished surfaces, and repainted metal components, while preserving its original character. It remains versatile and elegant, equally suited to a bedroom, living room, or hallway, where it brings both warmth and sophistication.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers, celebrated for his refined use of brass and his ability to combine functionality with poetic form. A co-founder of Taito Oy in 1918, he played a key role in shaping Finnish lighting design as electricity became widespread. His work gained international recognition in the postwar years, particularly in the United States, and today his rare and commissioned pieces are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. -
