Description
Rare Paavo Tynell Desk Lamp by Broderna Malmstroms. This model evolved form Paavo Tynell’s model 9212A pictured in Idman catalog 1953/54. The exact Shade for this model is visible in the photo November 1951 issue of Reader's Digest (Valitut Palat in Finnish) showing workers at the Finnish lighting company Taito Oy, led by the renowned designer Paavo Tynell. This desk lamp is one of a pair, however we are only selling one. Lamp is in very good original working condition. Turn switch and wire have been replaced, scuffs with rich patina to the brass as pictured.
Paavo Tynell’s collaboration with the Swedish manufacturer Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik (based in Malmö) was a significant part of his international reach during the 1940s and 1950s. Because Tynell's primary Finnish company, Taito Oy, could not meet the high demand for his intricate brasswork across the Nordic region. Bröderna Malmströms was licensed to manufacture his designs for the Swedish market. In the late 1940's Tynell's designs began appearing in Bröderna Malmströms catalogs, example, the iconic perforated brass model 1576 based on a design Tynell originally created in 1948. Early 1950s was the most active period for the partnership. Documentary evidence shows that representatives from Tynell's primary Finnish manufacturer, Idman (which managed his distribution), visited the Malmströms factory in Malmö on May 7, 1951, to oversee production standards. Tynell’s fixtures were formally cataloged by Bröderna Malmströms in their 1951 edition (specifically on page 21). -
