Description
This exceptionally rare two seat sofa was designed by Ernst Kühn for the Wivex restaurant in Copenhagen in the early 1930s. The custom design was most likely produced by the Danish company Normina A/S, the manufacturer Kühn chose to execute most of this designs. The sculptural design is marked by the gracious, rounded lines of the buttoned backrest ending in two wing shapes on the left and right. The sofa is visually attractive from all angles, with beautiful lines on the back as well, making it an ideal freestanding piece. The four slightly tapered legs are in solid beech wood which have been finished in a dark brown stain. The piece has been fully reconditioned and newly upholstered in a green de le Cuona fabric. The beautiful chunky and gutsy linen fabric twinned with wool and specially washed and dyed brings out the subtle differences in the yarns highlighting the varying depths and textures. A sample of the fabric is available upon request. The fully sprung seat makes this a very comfortable piece. Provenance: Restaurant Wivex, Copenhagen. In the years 1925, 1930 and 1943-46 the restaurant was renovated and modernized under the direction of Ernst Kühn. Acquired after the restaurant closed in the mid-1960s and has been in the same private collection ever since.
