Description
Pair of antique Napoleon III style ebonised wood and pietra dura cabinets
French, Late 19th Century
Height 117cm, width 115cm, depth 49cm
An outstanding example of late 19th century French decorative arts, this remarkable pair of Napoleon III style cabinets showcases exceptional craftsmanship and elegant design sensibilities from the period.
Created in France with meticulous attention to detail, each cabinet rests beneath a luxurious white marble top, neatly framed by a finely modelled ormolu border. Below the marble surface sits a slender frieze drawer, which leads gracefully to the larger storage compartments below.
Crafted from richly ebonised wood, the cabinets feature a harmonious blend of decorative materials and techniques. The drawers are highlighted with delicate gilt-bronze surrounds and include two shaped rectangular panels that frame a central pietra dura inlay. This colourful hardstone composition, depicting ripe cherries, adds an eye-catching focal point. A concealed push-button mechanism inside discreetly opens the drawers, offering a delightful surprise to the user.
The cabinet doors are the true showpieces: each one bears a central medallion inset with intricate pietra dura work. Unusually, a pierced ormolu basket spills over with finely crafted hardstone fruits, flowers, and leaves, rendered in stunning three-dimensional form. A butterfly in flight and a hovering hummingbird lend further vitality to the scene. While the design elements are nearly identical, they are mirrored emphasising the intentional creation of this pair as companion pieces.
Surrounding each medallion is an ornate ormolu frame, decorated with ribbon-tied garlands. Behind the lockable doors lie two fitted shelves. The sides of the cabinets reflect the aesthetic of the front, featuring matching mounts within simpler gilt-bronze borders.
Elegantly tapered legs support each piece, joined by a shaped apron enriched with ormolu mounts echoing naturalistic forms. Additional gilded details and brass inlays further elevate the decorative language of the design.
Rich in artistic merit and refined craftsmanship, this distinguished pair offers a compelling blend of decorative sophistication and historical character. -
