Description
Pair of Chinese carved hardwood and metal pedestals
Chinese, 20th Century
Height 97cm, width 40cm, depth 49cm
This distinctive pair of Chinese pedestals, dating to the 20th century, showcases superb craftsmanship with intricately carved decoration adorning all sides. Designed with both elegance and utility in mind, each piece is rich in traditional Chinese symbolism and form.
The tops are intentionally left unadorned, allowing the viewer's attention to be drawn to the detailed carving beneath. Below each top sits a frieze drawer, flanked by fluid floral scrollwork. A second, more substantial drawer appears near the base, featuring a complementary design. Both drawers are fitted with stylised metal handles, providing a subtle contrast to the warm tone of the wood.
At the centre, an open section is framed by elaborately pierced panels. These feature a variety of shapes, ranging from circular medallions to rectangular forms, each bearing carved motifs deeply rooted in Chinese cultural and decorative tradition. This interplay of openwork and solid carving gives the pedestals a dynamic and layered appearance.
Stability and structure are provided by four square-section legs, each connected by shaped aprons adorned with additional carved detail, creating visual continuity from top to bottom.
With distinct decoration on every side, these versatile pedestals serve as striking display stands or accent pieces. -
