Description
Designed circa 1970, the MP-61 lounge chairs by Brazilian designer Percival Lafer are emblematic of the country’s modern furniture production at the intersection of comfort, material innovation, and sculptural form. The design is defined by its enveloping fiberglass shell, which cradles the body and creates a visually striking, organic silhouette. Thickly padded leather upholstery, gathered along the rim and seat, introduces a sense of softness and informality that contrasts with the precision of the shell.
The chairs rest on robust sculptural bases executed in laminated plywood and finished in richly grained jacarandá (palissander) wood, preserved in their original finish. This architectural wooden structure provides both visual grounding and structural clarity, anchoring the rounded volumes above. Percival Lafer’s work is widely recognized for its synthesis of industrial materials and refined craftsmanship, and the MP-61 stands as one of his most successful lounge seating designs. This example is offered as a pair, underscoring its desirability and suitability for collectors of significant Brazilian modern furniture.
