Louis Comfort Tiffany for Tiffany & Co. Moonstone Necklace

Created circa 1910, this moonstone, opal, plique-à-jour enamel and 18K gold pendant necklace was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The pendant is set with an oval cabochon moonstone framed by plique-à-jour enamel fronds and opal blossoms, suspended from a circular and trace link chain highlighted by conforming opal and plique-à-jour enamel florets. Of impossible delicacy and a subtle, sweet blue palette, this exquisite handmade jewel is unmistakably a Louis Tiffany artwork.

Louis Tiffany's indispensable assistant in the early years of his jewelry practice was Julia Munson, who managed his art jewel workshop. She was herself was a talented designer and artisan. During this ten year period, when Louis was fully engaged in the project, he and Julia Munson collaborated fully, creating jewels that expressed, as John Loring put it, "the intriguingly beautiful graphic disorder of nature." In the Blue Book of 1909, they gave their jewelry the following description "Designed and made under the personal supervision of Louis C. Tiffany. No pieces duplicated. Among the features of this work are the remarkable color effects obtained in the combinations of gold and enamel with precious and semi-precious stones."
