Description
oastal landscape with sailboats by Dutch painter Dirk Smorenberg (1883–1960), circa 1917. Angular rocks frame a view across blue water towards a distant shoreline, while small sails and broad cloud forms introduce a sense of space and movement. Contrasting warm and cool colours give the scene a strong decorative presence.
Smorenberg’s stylised treatment of nature connects his work with Dutch modernism and Art Deco. His paintings are represented in Singer Laren, which held a retrospective of his work in 2005. -
