Description
Bronze sculpture of horse drawn chariot by Tommaso Campaiola
Italian, Early 20th Century
Height 48cm, width 76cm, depth 53cm
This exceptional patinated bronze group was made by the Italian sculptor Tommaso Campaiola, who was known for his animalier and equestrian bronzes such as this example.
The sculpture depicts a male figure in a chariot, pulled by four horses and decorated with foliate detailing. It is Classically rendered, with the charioteer wearing flowing Roman clothing and a helmet. His stance is particularly animated, reflecting the strong pull of the horses. The scene is startlingly naturalistic and dynamic, truly conveying a sense of the excitement and intensity of Roman chariot racing. The group is supported by a similarly naturalistic rocky base.
The sculpture is signed 'Campaiola' to the base.
