Description
This rare pair of table lamps was produced in Denmark during the early 20th century, circa 1900–1910. The design is attributed to the Danish sculptor Vilhelm Bissen, who in the early part of his career collaborated with the architect Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll on a number of lighting designs and decorative objects.
Executed in solid brass with a recently polished surface, the lamps rest on tripod bases with striking cast lion’s paw feet. Additional sculptural details include stepped crown motifs and a substantial central stem. The design combines an elegant neoclassical character with subtle early Nordic Art Nouveau influences.
The empire-shaped shades have been newly made in a cream-colored Pierre Frey silk, complementing the warmth of the brass.
The lamps are in very good condition. The brass has been gently polished while preserving a beautiful age-appropriate patina. Renewed shades.
