Description
This rare table lamp was designed by Marianne Starck and produced by Michael Andersen & Son in Denmark during the early 1960s. The model is numbered 1208 and is marked with the manufacturer’s paper label as well as the impressed model number on the underside of the base.
The lamp features a ceramic base finished in a rich brown hare’s fur glaze, with six oval relief motifs encircling the lower section in contrasting beige and brown tones. The combination of glaze and relief decoration gives the piece a refined sense of depth and texture while highlighting Starck’s distinctive ceramic vocabulary. The cylindrical lampshade is a new custom-made shade, handcrafted in a cream-colored Colefax and Fowler silk, complementing the warm tones of the ceramic base.
The lamp is in very good condition, with renewed 220V wiring, a new E26/E27 bulb fitting, and the new custom shade.
Specified dimensions:
Total height including shade: 57 cm / 22.44 inches.
Height of the base only, excluding shade: 36.5 cm / 14.37 inches.
Diameter of the shade: 25 cm / 9.84 inches.
Dimensions of the base: 16 × 16 cm / 6.30 × 6.30 inches.
Michael Andersen & Son pottery was based in Rønne on the Danish island of Bornholm, a region renowned for its ceramic tradition. Marianne Starck, a German-born artist trained in Hamburg, served as the artistic director of Michael Andersen & Son for several decades. Originally educated as a graphic artist, she became one of the defining designers of the factory, creating many of its most celebrated ceramic forms and glazes. -
