Description
Designed by Lynn Lawrence for Modeline of California, this carved biomorphic floor lamp feels less like décor and more like a sculptural art object you get to live with every day. Hand-carved from a single solid piece of wood, the base has a naturally flowing, organic silhouette that highlights the beauty of the grain and the precision of the carving. As the lamp is lit, the contours create soft highlights and shadow lines that shift across the surface—almost like light moving over a small-scale sculpture in a gallery. Emerging in the late 1940s as one of Modeline’s earliest modern designs, it’s a standout example of the company’s forward-thinking collaborations with artists like Lynn Lawrence at the very beginning of California Modern lighting. Newly refinished, newly rewired, and paired with a fresh linen shade, it’s ready to use while still preserving the original character that makes these early Modeline pieces so special. With its warm, tactile form and modern simplicity, it brings an elevated, collected feel to any room—whether styled beside a lounge chair or used as a statement piece in a corner.
Fun Historical Fact
Lynn Lawrence was originally trained as a sculptor, which is exactly why her lighting designs have such a strong sense of form and presence even when they’re not turned on. Her collaboration with Modeline was especially notable in the mid-century era because women were far less commonly credited as designers in the lighting industry, making her work feel rare and trailblazing. Modeline, founded in Los Angeles by Bernie Roberts, was known for embracing modern design and working with artists to create pieces that blurred the line between function and sculpture. That spirit of artistic collaboration is a big reason early Modeline designs like this remain so collectible today.
