Description
Produced by Cimo in Brazil during the 1960s, this extendable dining table is a refined expression of Brazilian modernism, combining architectural clarity, functional ingenuity, and the visual richness of native hardwood.
The broad rectangular top is constructed in hardwood and finished with richly figured rosewood veneer. Its surface reveals dramatic, flowing veins that shift between warm amber, reddish brown, and deep chocolate tones. Carefully arranged sections of veneer create a rhythmic composition across the expansive top, allowing the natural grain to become an integral part of the table’s design. A finely articulated edge frames the surface and emphasizes its long, elegant proportions.
Designed for versatility, the table extends to accommodate additional seating while retaining a balanced silhouette. The substantial top appears remarkably light above six slender, tapered hardwood legs, which are positioned inward from the ends to create generous overhangs. This thoughtful placement gives the table an open, architectural presence while providing stability and comfortable seating around its perimeter.
Founded in southern Brazil, Cimo became one of the country’s most significant furniture manufacturers and played an important role in the development and broader adoption of modern Brazilian design. Its work united industrial production with accomplished woodworking, durable construction, and an increasingly modern formal language. Today, well-preserved Cimo furniture is sought by collectors for its historical importance, quality of execution, and distinctive place within twentieth-century Brazilian design.
The table has been carefully refinished to revive the depth, movement, and luminosity of the rosewood while respecting its original construction. It retains the original Cimo manufacturer’s mark, providing clear provenance and further enhancing its significance as a collectible example of Brazilian mid-century modern furniture.
