Literature: A "Gazelle" clip brooch of this design is pictured in Tiffany Jewels, by John Loring, p. 191.
Hired by Walter Hoving and Van Day Truex, Jean Schlumberger and his "fertile and colorful imagination", as John Loring described it, helped to revive Tiffany & Co.'s body of jewelry and decorative arts design after the firm had drifted during the Depression and War years. A "defector from the cult of Modernism", as the New York Times termed him, Schlumberger lured the most influential style icons of his day - Jackie Kennedy, Diana Vreeland, Gloria Vandebilt, Babe Paley, Elizabeth Taylor - into his orbit. Known as "Prince of Whimsy", Schlumberger created vibrantly colored, extravagant jewels, touched with the Surrealist flair of his early career with Elsa Schiaparelli, that led high American jewelry design for decades. -
