Description
An elegant ceiling lamp model. 51129 in white opaline glass, designed by Tapio Wirkkala and manufactured in a joint effort by Idman & Iittala in Finland in the 1950s. This very minimal design fits easily into any interior. As with a lot of Scandinavian design the beauty of this lamp stems from the simplicity. Nothing extra, only what is necessary, and once again, less is more. The lamp has a nice vintage patina and the condition is flawless.
Idman was one of the leading lamp manufacturers in Finland during the middle of the 20th century. Along with companies like Taito Oy, Itsu and Orno they defined what Finnish design lamps would become. Idman made high quality lamps and produced lamps for major projects.
Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a genius designer and sculptor who was recognized as a leading figure in Finnish arts and crafts in the "golden era" of 1950s-1960s after the wars. Sometimes even compared to Da Vinci, his incredible understanding of geometry resulted in some truly amazing pieces which you can't compare to any other designer's work. He used a number of different materials in his designs including glass, wood, plywood, silver and ceramics, and always had a very unique and distinct approach to his designs. Wirkkala has been awarded a great number of Triennale awards, gold medals and special recognitions, and is internationally acclaimed. -
