Description
French Louis XVI style ivory inlaid birchwood antique centre table
French, Mid-19th Century
Height 81cm, width 174cm, depth 116cm
An outstanding example of 19th century French craftsmanship, this antique centre table brings together premium materials and refined decorative artistry. Made from fine birchwood, the table showcases the wood’s natural grain, skilfully chosen and brought to life by master artisans.
The tabletop, elegantly contoured with softly rounded corners, features intricate ivory inlay. At its heart lies an ornate central medallion adorned with scrolling elements, which frame a luxuriant floral display. This floral motif, interwoven with branching forms and curling scrolls, spreads gracefully outward. A veneered border composed of straight-grained panels runs along the edge, subtly accented with delicate acanthus leaf ivory inlays placed at intervals, enhancing the table’s decorative harmony.
Beneath the top, a striking frieze spans each side, densely embellished with exceptional ivory inlay work. A stylised shell motif sits centrally, flanked by trailing floral garlands that draw attention toward larger, more elaborate floral carvings situated above each leg. These inlaid panels are bordered by fine linear ivory bands, with subtle black detailing that defines and elevates the intricacy of the motifs.
The table is supported by four tapering, square legs, each terminating in a carved cube featuring floral ornamentation. Scrollwork and scalloped shell carvings adorn the legs, echoing decorative elements found above.
This centre table is not only a testament to superb 19th century design but also a versatile piece suited to both traditional and modern interiors.
The ivory in this piece has been registered under the ivory submission reference: 1HYMYB99. -
