British Sailor’s Woolwork of Royal Navy Ship Off Land

Signed & Dated WR 1865
11 in. high × 14-3/4 in. wide × 3/4 in. deep

A captivating example of 19th-century maritime folk art, this finely detailed “woolie” depicts a Royal Navy three-masted ship — with distinctive funnel and furled sails — sailing near the coast in 1865. The scene, brought to life in vibrant wool threads, features the ship flying the White Ensign, set against a tranquil coastal landscape with a sandy shore, church, fort, and red-roofed houses. Signed “WR 1865” in scarlet wool, this work reveals both the skill and sentiment of its maker. Housed in a hand-painted frame imitating tortoiseshell and now protected with museum-quality UV glass, it offers a vivid window into naval life and Victorian craftsmanship.
