Lucien Adrion (1889–1953)

Saint Tropez, 1920s

Oil on canvas, signed lower right

Presented in Art Déco period frame

Approximate Dimensions: 40 x 32 inches

Provenance: Private collection, Paris

Before it attracted international celebrities and moneyed tycoons, Saint-Tropez was, in the early 1900’s, home to local fishermen and a few visiting artists. In this 1930s depiction of its harbor, French post-impressionist artist Lucien Adrion captures with subtlety and success the sheer beauty of the small port. Taking an unusually modern viewpoint, the artist’s composition encourages us viewers to take in  the play of light on the water,  through an elaborate palette of shimmering blue & pink hues, the rare custom yachts acting as décor  in the serenity of the Mediterranean seascape. Adrion’s atmospheric rendering of Saint Tropez’ charm, of the particular light and clarity that prevail there, grants us with a lasting emotional experience,  similar to one we would have in real life when nature leaves us silent, in admiration of a scene that transcends by its beauty.
