Svend Svendsen, (French, 1864–1945)

The Etruscan Vase

Charcoal drawing on paper

Signed and dated 1886 l.r.

28 x 25.5 cms

Notes: Various inscriptions, possibly from an art college, and watermark

Provenance: Private collection, New York

This academic drawing, executed with remarkable finesse by Svendsen in his early adult years, bears all the qualities of the late 19th century Northern European school. Critical acclaim that praised  the ‘poetry of silence’ in the art of Nordic masters such as Hammershøi, noted its rendering of evanescent light, its enigmatic coolness and distant simplicityIt can be expected that such reviews would remark on our drawing’s evident lineage to this artistic language and influence.

Executed in worsted wool and elegantly framed, its rich textures and meticulous detail — classical columns, flowering vines, and whimsical red-curtained windows — elevate it from humble needlecraft to a pictorial tour de force. Such works reflected aspirations of the Victorian era translating the prestige of landed estates into vibrant textile artistry.
