This academic drawing, executed with remarkable finesse by Svendsen in his early adult years, bears all the qualities of the late 19th century Northern European school. Critical acclaim that praised the ‘poetry of silence’ in the art of Nordic masters such as Hammershøi, noted its rendering of evanescent light, its enigmatic coolness and distant simplicity. It can be expected that such reviews would remark on our drawing’s evident lineage to this artistic language and influence.

Chinese Export Platter, Arms of Samuel Vaughan, c. 1750

Samuel Vaughan (1720–1802) was born in Ireland, had businesses in London, Jamica and enjoyed close ties to America. He was friends with George Washington. The famous “Vaughan Portrait” of Washington by Gilbert Stuart in the National Gallery was owned by Samuel Vaughan and is named for him. The unusual decoration on this service is copied from a bookplate, 11-1/4" x 14-3/4". $9,500

ILIAD is pleased to offer for the first time this exceptionally rare example of the French Art Deco master Albert Armond Rateau’s work. Created in the early 20s — part of the iconic interior of the Theatre Daunou Paris where Rateau collaborated with fashion mogul Jeanne Lanvin, the enamel and 23 karat gilt credenza is crafted in solid and carved mahogany and signed in multiple locations by the artist’s atelier. Two Gelede Dance Masks, Wood, Color

While the lower part of these helmet-masks show the face of equanimity, the upper part, composed of animals and the blacksmith's instruments, are elements connected with a particular symbolism and spiritual power of "the mothers" for whom the Gelede is performed.
