Fierce Elegance: The Staffordshire Bulldog Stirrup Cup
Staffordshire Pearlware, circa 1820

4-1/4 in. high × 5-1/4 in. wide × 4-3/4 in. deep

A superb example of early 19th-century ceramic art, this Staffordshire pearlware stirrup cup is boldly modeled as a bulldog’s head, capturing the breed’s distinctive strength and tenacity with remarkable realism. Skillfully hand-painted in naturalistic brown tones with a vivid orange collar adorned in gilt, the piece balances rugged character with refined detail. Intended for use in the aristocratic tradition of the stirrup cup — offered to riders before the hunt — this vessel also features small glazed holes near the rim, suggesting it could be displayed as a gentleman’s sporting trophy. $5,500
