Shawn Henderson

Inspired by the vision of a Swedish summer home, Shawn Henderson’s 1830s farmhouse in upstate New York is a tranquil getaway, melding a trifecta of design elements: colonial architecture, mid-century modern furnishings and haute luxury textiles. Shawn integrated pieces from Scandinavian modern design masters Arne Jacobsen, Fritz Henningsen and Kaare Klint with sumptuous textiles by Fortuny and Loro Piana, and, as a nod to the bucolic setting of his home, features such as a perfectly rusted clawfoot tub, and vintage 1940s rock maple Cushman lounge chairs in the sunroom. Rustic beams and a brick fireplace surround painted white are the foundation of a clean-lined living room. The vintage settee from Kaare Klint and a rare 1930s round-top table in Cuban mahogany by Frits Henningsen are Scandinavian Modern classics. Strategically positioned mid-century floor lamps and a rolling bar cart used as a coffee table are both practical and beautiful. The white area rug was found on a trip to Morocco.

Left: A pair of Papa Bear chairs by Hans Wegner, a modern sofa in soft gray and a pair of table lamps designed by Shawn Henderson form a comfortable sitting area just steps away from the open kitchen and dining area. Right: Favorite objects in quiet tones of white and gray are displayed on a shelf. A mini mid-century style task lamp is positioned to illuminate graphic artwork.

Arne Jacobsen  ’s Drop chairs surround Chris Lehrecke's "Picnic Table", constructed of two planks of walnut with a blackened steel base.  A mid-century six-light chandelier hangs overhead.

The bedroom is serene and simple in form, but features sumptuous fabrics. The wing chair is covered in an Edelman suede, the handcrafted indigo blanket is from Swan Island, and the curtains are in Camo Isole by Fortuny, an untraditional camouflage created from images of water and islands rather than foliage. The walls are clad in a Loro Piana fabric.

An artfully rusted clawfoot tub was rescued from the dump and reglazed — inside only! The rustic stool is a handy and thoughtful addition.

Rock maple Cushman chairs designed by Herman DeVries, vintage pieces recalled from Shawn's upstate New York youth, are revitalized with crisp striped cushions. Their wide arms are the perfect place to rest a refreshing drink.
