Description
This large table lamp by Gebrüder Cosack, featuring a "Sputnik" starburst configuration. The structure consists of a central chrome orb from which multiple arms extend, alternating between light sockets and decorative chrome spheres. The "Sputnik" style emerged in the late 1950s following the launch of the Soviet satellite, symbolizing the era's fascination with atomic forms and galactic exploration. This "Atomic" aesthetic utilized radiating lines and spherical motifs to reflect the optimism of the mid-20th century technological frontier. The reflective surfaces amplify the light from the numerous bulbs, creating a sculptural glow typical of 1960s German modernist lighting.
Gebrüder Cosack (Gecos) was founded in 1848 in Neheim-Hüsten, Germany, and grew into one of the country's most prominent lighting manufacturers. After World War II, the company shifted toward avant-garde and modernist designs, collaborating with notable designers such as Wilhelm Wagenfeld and K.H. Kinsky. -
