Description
A sculptural interplay between primitive expression and mid-century refinement, this table lamp by Gianni Pinna offers a compelling visual narrative in wood, glaze, and brass. Produced in the 1970s, it captures the spirit of Italian design at the crossroads of brutalism and craft.
Design
The lamp’s body is a commanding composition of hand-carved wood juxtaposed with highly textured glazed ceramic. On one side, the smooth yet muscular lines of the carved hardwood evoke organic modernism, punctuated with deep recesses and curved voids that call to mind tribal mask forms or abstracted totems. The opposing surface contrasts with a molten, metallic-like glaze, applied in rich bronze-black tones, suggesting geological formations or cooled lava. This duality in material and treatment lends the piece a tactile and visual rhythm.
Elevated on two brass half-circle feet, the lamp gains a sense of lightness despite its monolithic form. The original cylindrical shade in a brown textile complements the warmth of the wood and softens the overall profile when lit. The lamp is signed at the lower edge, and although details on Pinna remain limited, this piece reveals a designer with a sharp eye for dramatic contrast and sculptural form.
Condition
The lamp is in good vintage condition. Some age-related signs are present including a minor crack at the base and subtle wear on the glazed surface, both consistent with its age and use.
The current lampshade can be purchased with the lamp and the costs are 200 euro. -
