Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni, 'Toio' floor lamp for Flos, Italy, 1962

$ 2,200
  • Description
    A special 300 watt car headlight, imported from the United States in the early 1960s, is used for this floor lamp. The lamp was realized assembling ready made industrial objects, modifying their functions and looking for new applications, for a floor fixture with indirect light. The lacquered metal base, weight-foot for the stability of the lamp, houses the universal transformer, which also serves as a counterweight and is left exposed, necessary to compensate for the voltage difference between the light source (125 volts) and the European voltage (220 volts). On it, a metal structure acts as a handle and rod holder, a hexagonal chromed drawn wire equipped with fishing rod loops to contain the external electrical conductors, a fixing screw allows the height of the rod to be adjusted (from 170 to 200 cm) and two blades are used to wind the residual cable. At the top the light source is received by a special frame, consisting of two curved rods to which a metal ring is welded.
