Jo Hammerborg

Danish, 1920 - 1982
Jo Hammerborg (1920-1982) was a Danish industrial designer and silversmith who is best known for his work in the field of lighting design. Hammerborg began his career as an apprentice silversmith in Copenhagen before going on to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

In the 1950s, Hammerborg began designing lighting fixtures for the Danish lighting manufacturer Fog & Mørup, where he worked as the company's chief designer for nearly two decades. During this time, Hammerborg created some of his most iconic designs, including the "Cobra" lamp and the "Nova" lamp, both of which are now considered classics of Danish design.

Hammerborg's designs are characterized by their simple, minimalist forms and their use of high-quality materials, such as brass, copper, and stainless steel. He was particularly interested in creating designs that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing, and many of his lamps feature adjustable shades or other innovative features.

In addition to his work for Fog & Mørup, Hammerborg also designed lighting fixtures for other companies, including the Swedish lighting manufacturer Luxus. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and he is regarded as one of the most influential lighting designers of the mid-20th century.
