Joseph-André Motte

French, 1925 - 2013
Joseph-André Motte (1925–2013) was a visionary French designer who helped shape postwar modernism through elegant, functional furniture and large-scale public commissions. A graduate of the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, Motte began his career under Marcel Gascoin before co-founding the Atelier de Recherche Plastique, a design collective that pushed the boundaries of material and form. Known for his innovative use of rattan, Formica, aluminum, and molded plastic, Motte designed iconic pieces such as the 770 chair and the distinctive seating used in Paris Métro stations. His interiors for Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports, government buildings, and transportation hubs exemplified a refined, modern aesthetic. Motte’s work remains a benchmark of French mid-century design, celebrated for its clarity, versatility, and enduring relevance.
