Description
This authentic wood milk container from Rwanda can be traced to the Tutsi people, an ethnic group of the African Great Lakes region. From the 15th century, cattle and the arts - among many other things - had an important role in Tutsi culture, giving birth to beautiful everyday objects, such as this jug.
Skilfully carved from a single block of wood, this milk container has a simple cylindrical shape. On the sides metal highlights can be observed that are the traditionally used method of repairing the cracks in the wood. Since this container was made to be a utilitarian object, it shows signs of long use and the traditional repairs add a special touch to this beautiful piece. These decorative milk jugs have long been used by the Tutsi people of Rwanda and other groups in rural areas of Burundi, Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Their purpose was to carry milk, water and even food. The simplicity and functionality of the design is the element that brings their beauty. This piece can be a highlight in any decor and serve as a vase as well, guaranteed to be a wonderful conversation piece.
Being handmade utilizing organic materials, there are whimsical imperfections that make such a unique and rare cultural object even more beautiful. The indigenous decorative repair work adds even more to the intrinsic value and beauty.
