Description
LARGE LATE 18TH / EARLY 19TH CENTURY FRENCH ‘TOILE PEINTE’ (PAINTED CANVAS)
Painted to look like tapestries, sometimes known as 'tapisserie des pauvres' with decorative borders, these paintings would have been part of the decoration in a large room, fixed directly to the walls within the panelling which would have surrounded them. They are typical of the late 18th and early 19th century, showing a romantic view of the countryside with trees, castles and buildings, fountains, bridges, animals and birds.
Matt water based paint on a course hemp canvas. France, circa 1800.
