Pair of French bergères, circa 1830–1840

A matched pair of French bergères from the early‑to‑mid 19th century, offered in original form with later upholstery. Each chair presents a tall, slightly reclined back, enclosed sides, and a loose seat cushion—hallmarks of the bergère type that emphasize comfort and relaxed use rather than strict formal placement.

The frames are executed in fine hardwood, showing gently tapered legs, refined arm supports, and a restrained overall profile consistent with transitional French taste after the height of Rococo. Upholstery uses period‑appropriate patterned fabric in warm tones, applied to both back and seat, creating a coherent, salon‑ready look. The loose cushions sit on a well‑proportioned seat rail and likely rest on original webbing or springs, yielding a deeper, wider seating area than a typical formal fauteuil.
